V.A. Hospital Sky Bridge
Location: Portland, OR Contract Value:
Spanning a valley between two hospital campuses, this stayed pedestrian bridge makes a visual impact on the city of Portland. The 200-metre-long superstructure is made up of 8-metre sections of jumbo chord, boxed trusses. Somerset developed the erection scheme based on the lifting capacity of the steel erector's crane. The main span was free cantilevered from both towers, and a step-by-step analysis was performed for all stages.
Somerset also provided design of jacking systems for stays, back span tie-down design and tensioning sequences, analysis checks of partially welded support towers during superstructure cantilevering and jacking scheme for mid-span closure.
