Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Somerset was retained by Tacoma Narrows Constructors to review the erection methods, construction scheme and equipment designs for this 855-metre main span suspension bridge. The new bridge was built parallel to and south of the existing Tacoma Narrows Bridge and has a total length of 1646 metres. The bridge at the time was the longest suspension bridge to be built in the United States since the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in 1964. The bridge consists of 155-metre-tall concrete main towers and a 17-metre-wide steel orthotropic deck with a stiffening truss.
